See the Son, Believe the Word

See the Son, Believe the Word

John 5:19-47

Main Idea: See the Son. Believe the Word. Come and Live.

I. The Son’s Authority (5:19–30)

Perfect Union (5:19–20)

John 5:19: Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.

The Authority to Give Life (5:21, 24–25)

John 5:21: For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will.

In the Old Testament, the raising of the dead and the giving of life is a prerogative that belongs to God alone.

Deuteronomy 32:39: See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand.

1 Samuel 2:6: The LORD kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up.

The Authority to Judge (5:22–23, 27–30)

John 5:22-23: The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.

Equal Honor (5:23)

John 5:23: ...that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father.

To honor the Son is to honor God. To reject the Son is to reject God. There is no middle ground.

II. The Son’s Witnesses (5:31-37)

Jesus calls forward witnesses like a prosecutor in a courtroom. This is covenant lawsuit language, echoing Deuteronomy and the prophets. In Deuteronomy 30, Moses sets before Israel life and death and calls heaven and earth as witnesses. In Isaiah, God summons the nations and presents His case. And now Jesus stands in the dock fulfilling the Law and the Prophets - but as more than a prophet. He is the One to whom all the witnesses testify.

The Testimony of John the Baptist (5:31–35)

John 5:33–35: You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. Not that the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.”

The Testimony of the Signs (5:36)

John 5:36: ...the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me.

The Testimony of the Father (5:37)

John 5:37: And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen.

The Testimony of the Scriptures (5:39–40)

John 5:39-47: You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.

The Testimony of Moses (5:45–47)

John 5:45-47: Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?

The Tragedy of Missing the Point (5:41–44)

John 5:41-44: I do not receive glory from people. But I know that you do not have the love of God within you... How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?

See the Son. Believe the Word. Come and live.
