The Vanity of Wealth

The Vanity of Wealth

Ecclesiastes 5:8-20

Main Idea: Joy and satisfaction are not found in money but in our contentment in God.

I. The Problem Outside (8-9)

Genesis 2:5,7 “When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground… then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.”

II. The Problem Inside (10-11, 13-17)

“You can love money and have a lot, and you can love money and have a little. The issue is not how much you have; the issue is the heart. The issue is failure to be content with what you have. There was a time in your life when you would have jumped at the opportunity to have the income, family, and house that you presently have, but now it is not enough.”

-Jonathan Akin

Job 1:21 And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”

III. The Solution Above (12, 18-20)

  1. Universal

  2. Narrow

Philippians 4:11-13 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
