I Believe in the Holy Spirit

I Believe in the Holy Spirit

John 14:15-27

Main Idea: The greatest gift the Father gives to those who follow the Son is the Holy Spirit.

I. Who is the Holy Spirit? (V14-17)

A. The Holy Spirit is a Person

A person who can be grieved. (Ephesians 4:30)

A person who can be outraged (Hebrews 10:29)

A person who can be lied to (Acts 5:3)

A person who loves (Romans 15)

B. The Holy Spirit is Fully God

Heteros - another of different (class group or type) quality than the former

Allos - another of the same kind

II. What does the Holy Spirit do? (V16-17, 26-27)

A. Regenerates

“And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.” Ezekiel 36:26-27

B. Advocates

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:26-28

C. Teaches

“For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” 2 Peter 1:21

““But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.” John 15:26-27

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” John 16:13-14

III. Why do we need the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit warms our affections for Christ.
